Hazari Lau is a traditional Bangladeshi bottle gourd selected for exceptionally long, uniform fruit and a heavy, reliable yield. The trick to getting that long, straight shape is simple: train the vine over an overhead trellis or pergola so the young fruit can hang straight down as it grows, rather than curling along the ground.

Before sowing

Soak seeds 12–24 hours in warm water to soften the hard seed coat and speed germination.

Germination · 7–14 days

Sow 2–3cm deep. Bottle gourd seedlings dislike root disturbance, so sow direct where possible, or into large biodegradable pots if starting indoors.

Set up the trellis early

This is a vigorous vine that can grow several centimetres a day once warm. Install a strong overhead trellis, pergola or arch before you need it — this is what gives Hazari Lau its long, straight shape.

Growing on

Full sun, deep regular watering, and a balanced feed early on, switching to a phosphorus-rich feed once flowering starts to encourage fruit set.

Night flowering

Large white flowers open in the evening and close by morning, pollinated mainly by moths. In gardens with few night pollinators, hand-pollination in the evening can improve fruit set.

Harvest · 55–75 days

Pick while young and tender for the best eating quality — the skin should still yield slightly to a fingernail. Left too long, the flesh turns tough and fibrous.
