A general guide only. Unlike most leafy greens on this site, red amaranth is a genuine warm-season crop — sow after frost risk has passed, and it will happily keep growing right through the hottest part of your summer.

What happens next

Sowing

Scatter thinly and cover lightly with about 5–6mm of soil — the seed is tiny, so don't bury it deep. Keep the surface consistently moist until it comes up.

Germination · 5–10 days

Fast and reliable in warm soil. This isn't a fussy seed — if the weather's warm, it comes up quickly.

Thinning

Once seedlings reach a few centimetres, thin to about 10–15cm apart. The thinnings themselves are edible — don't waste them.

Snip young leaves for the most tender texture and mildest flavour.

Full harvest · 25–35 days

Cut the outer leaves regularly, cut-and-come-again style, and the plant keeps producing for weeks.

Left to flower

If you let a plant go, it sends up a striking crimson flower plume and eventually sets seed — worth saving for next season, or simply enjoying as an ornamental feature in the garden.
